How to Lead Prayer Groups
IF you have a heart to lead a prayer group, here a few helpful ideas for keeping the group on track, fresh and responsive to God’s leadings.
An effective prayer group leader:
- is a student of prayer
- allows God to lead the group; listen for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and risk being obedient
- is humble and transparent
- sets a tone of expectancy, joy and trust
- helps members fell accepted, comfortable and loved
- encourages the group to open up to God’s highest good
- refrains from using the time for teaching
- assists members in learning to pray for each other, their families, friends, communities, their nations and the world
- allows for the development of quietness, silence and stillness
- is willing to experiment with new of different prayer techniques (see Types of Prayer)
- closes time with reflections on what God is doing among the group, remind the group they are part of God’s plan and include a form of corporate expression such as: singing, thankfulness, etc.
